Hearing about Zero's (of Megaman X fame) inclusion in the upcoming Marvel VS. Capcom 3 game left me on a giddy high that resulted in the creation of this picture. I can't count how many hours I poured into the Megaman (thats Rockman if your savvy) games when I was small, and how many notebooks I spent filling up with my own robot masters. Now that I'm not so small it seemed only right to go back to my roots a bit and whip up something to show my approval of another Megaman character making it into this game. Now this was originally supposed to be just a daily sketch, something simple, but somehow it mutated and formed into something that devoured my entire afternoon. Now thats okay, because I really like the end result. But it left me shaking my head over my inability to work out something quickly.
So I tried another crack at it. This time dropping my tendency of drawing something by means of relying on line-work. By focusing more on the silhouette, planes, and shadows I was able to carry out the initial sketch, and subsequent render, much quicker. Plus it was lots of fun to work in this style to boot! I also took this as a chance to inject a bit more of the whimsy and flatness that I feel is becoming more of a staple as I move forward with my work.

For comparison sake I created a quick composite layout showing the steps it took me to create the first image. This is how I traditionally create most of my illustrations, and as you can see,it starts with a loose drawing and continues to refine and tighten until the picture is finished. Now this manner of doing things isn't necessarily a bad thing per se, it's just more laborious. Sometimes it counts to have a process thats quick :p
I think I will consider this a successful exercise.
Here's hoping I am able to make something just as fun when the real blue bomber makes his own arrival in MvC3.
Till next time.
